The challenge is real and it is dangerous. Prone to volatile weather patterns, unstable sea ice, sheer glaciers and crevasse-riddled mountains, Antarctica has always been a lure for the most rugged of adventurers. This DVD includes three programs that present the dangers and hardships experienced by the men and women who have personally witnessed one of the world’s most extreme and inhospitable regions.
Hell On Ice
Crossing the Antarctic Peninsula, a jagged finger jutting away from the Antarctic continent towards Cape Horn, without mechanized assistance, is considered one of the last great challenges for adventurers who rely on courage and strength alone. It is a challenge two friends, Pete Bland and Jay Watson, are determined to overcome. See the story from start to finish. Share the frustration, exhaustion, and disaster as they attempt to survive 23 days in the harshest conditions.
Ice Pilots
Join the crew of the US Air force’s ‘ski birds’ as they fly missions into the world’s most unforgiving terrain. Landing on the great southern ice continent is always a time of uncertainty as the freezing storms that hurtle across the barren landscape can obliterate a pilot’s view within seconds and last for hours. But despite the dangers and hardships experienced by the men and women of the 109th Airlift, they know they are a lifeline for the scientists and researchers working in the world’s frozen wastelands.
Whales
“Whales” investigates the historical aspects of whaling and its demise as well as the nature of whales themselves. The human history of exploitation of the Earth’s creatures, and its resources, is a sad reflection on the human soul - but the singular collective act of creating a sanctuary may be one light in our attitude to the animals with which we share this planet.
