From suburban Florida to the far reaches of Borneo … from the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi to distant Patagonia, join the Wild Secrets team on their exploration of mammals. Manatees, elephant seals, barbirusa and the proboscis monkey are all featured in their hidden habitats. This highly acclaimed wildlife documentary series reveals the struggle to survive not only against natural predators and harsh environments but also the encroaching presence of mankind.
This DVD includes four episodes from the Wild Secrets series:
Part One - Manatee: Gentle Giants of Suburbia
Gentle giants are lurking at the bottom of some of the most affluent gardens in Florida. Manatees are large aquatic mammals that share the same ancestry as elephants – they’re not well known world wide, but they’re a household name in Crystal River, Florida. Every year hundreds of manatees journey north to spend the winter in Crystal River’s many canals where natural hot springs provide a lifeline. Their charm and gentle nature has endeared them to the locals, but there are hidden dangers in living so close to humans. A killer that attacks with mechanical precision takes about 80 Florida manatees every year. Who or what is killing these gentle giants and what can be done to stop them?
Part Two - Elephant Seal: Masters of the Beach
On a beach in Patagonia a large bull elephant seal presides over his harem of one hundred and twenty females. His job is to protect his cows and control the borders of his harem from male intruders. As the season progresses and the beach turns into a massive maternity ward, the beach master finds it increasingly difficult to maintain control. Witness birth, death, and high drama during one breeding season on the Valdes Peninsula, which sees wife abduction, baby abandonment and an orca attack.
Part Three - Barbirusa: Unmasking a Legend
Two hundred and fifty years ago a Dutch explorer drew a picture of a strange animal he had glimpsed in the remote jungles of Sulawesi. It had the head of a pig, the body of a deer and four bizarrely-shaped tusks. It was called the barbirusa. A creature of myth and legend, little was known about this shy and retiring animal until a young British scientist lifted the mask. We journey for two days into the remote Indonesian jungle and share a rare encounter with a herd of babirusa at a remarkable volcanic salt lake.
Part Four - Proboscis Monkey: Big Noses of Borneo
Pukuri is a male proboscis monkey in his prime. He’s leader of the troop, has lots of wives and some very cute blue-faced babies. But life in the jungle is far from quiet – there are bachelors out to steal his wives, death-defying river crossings and even the digestion of poisonous food. Well known for its large nose and big pot belly, the endangered proboscis monkey is seldom seen in captivity, so this is a rare chance to watch them up close.
