Join the Wild Secrets team on their expeditions through the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania. This DVD features lions, leopards, jackals and hyenas living in their natural environment on the great savannas of Western African. Learn and see with in depth coverage how these predators survive this harsh environment. This highly acclaimed wildlife documentary series reveals the struggle to survive not only against natural predators and harsh environments but also the encroaching presence of man.
This DVD includes four episodes from the Wild Secrets series:
Part One - Lions: A Pride of Their Own
There comes a time when every young male lion is forced out of the pride in which he was born. He is forced to become a wanderer, hunting and scavenging on the fringes of lion society. Little was known about the lives of these adolescent nomads until a three-year study followed three brothers as they struggled to survive in the no-man’s land between the prides. After a lonely and sometimes perilous journey the three brothers finally find a pride to call their own.
Part Two - Leopard: Family Trees
This is a touching tale of a female leopard’s struggle to raise two cubs in the harsh Savannah. One cub is bold and adventurous, often straying from the safety of the family tree - the other is more cautious, preferring to stay close to her mother. For two months we follow the family’s fight to stay alive. Can both cubs survive this unforgiving environment, or will one fall victim to the deadly Savannah?
Part Three - Hyena: Family Matters
Always the bad guys in the movies, hyenas have suffered bad press as the scavengers of the Savannah. But there’s another side to this story: hyenas are in fact bold hunters, and scavenge less than lions. They are also devoted pack animals with a sophisticated ranking system. Cubs are brought up communally and even the old and sick don't go hungry. We reveal the flip side to the ‘bad guy’ hyena story.
Part Four -Golden Jackal: Home Helper
History portrays them as sly, cunning scavengers, and superstition links them to death and the underworld. But images can be deceiving. Golden jackals are fast and efficient hunters, but they’re also devoted parents, and new research reveals that they often have home help. A home helper is a puppy from a previous litter that sticks around to help raise this season’s pups. The helper’s life is not an easy one. He ranks lowest in the family and gets a good deal of tough love. But golden jackal puppies have a much better chance of surviving if a helper is around.
