Part 1
North American muscle car expert Jim Bodanis takes us on a tour of his 1970 Chevelle SS LS 6 convertible. And one of the most sensational classics of the 1930’s is the Avions Voisin C-20, known as the Mylord Demi-Berlin. This one-of-a-kind automobile owes its unique design to the engineering genius of French aircraft designer, Gabriel Voisin.

Part 2
Gordon Miller Buehrig was just another young designer at the thriving Auburn Automobile Company in Pennsylvania before the war, when he was tapped to design one of the top ten cars of all time: the 1936 Cord 810. It took 30 years for the echoes of the 1936 Cord 810 to be felt. The 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado was a tribute to its coffin-nosed predecessor with it’s similar front wheel drive approach to transportation.

Part 3
The 1938 Delage was one of the most stylish, curvaceous and exotic cars ever built – all in the pursuit of a beautiful woman. Men may also have bought the 1970 Corvette Stingray to attract women, but this car’s hourglass figure also spoke to the male of the species. And the 1970 Roadrunner Superbird was created by Plymouth in an effort to win the heart of only one man: superstar stock car driver, Richard Petty.

Part 4
This rare and outrageously expensive Rolls Royce had the chassis of a 1939 model, and the body of a 1947 ‘dream car’; ordered by a New York businessman, it’s sole reason for existence was to tempt beautiful high society women into its luxurious interior. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the working man’s 1947 Ford, owned by a successful small town real estate agent, reminds him of his youth and the girls he was able to attract with it back in the day!

Part 5
America in the late 1960’s was crazy for muscle cars. Chrysler, Ford and Chevy duked it out in the car lots and on the NASCAR tracks… and so did fans. Meet three die-hard muscle car fanatics – tough guys get emotional! The Chevy ’69 Camaro SS vs the Ford 1970 Boss Mustang 302 vs the Chrysler 1970 Barracuda.

Part 6
Pulling up in the glamorous 1932 Duesenberg Model J sent a clear message to the world: you had arrived. Today, Duesenberg’s are considered to be one of the most collectible cars of all time. The 1935 Auburn Sedan may have been considered one of the most beautiful cars ever built, and thanks to its powerful straight 8 engine and 2 speed axle, it can still cruise down highways with ease.

Part 7
As a kid, collector Colin Kennedy accompanied his dad on a road trip to the local Honda dealer and experienced love at first sight: the 1965 Honda S600. Love came knocking for lawyer Ron Good when he was a just a young boy, too: that’s when he first saw his Dream Car – a 1951 Four Door Kaiser Traveler.

Part 8
The Pierce Arrows of the teens and twenties were the last American cars to switch from right hand drive to left hand drive. When collector Rick Morrison took on the task of restoring his 1926 Pierce Arrow it had seen better days. For Larry Pittman, his 1965 Lincoln Continental is all about winning. It’s a constant challenge to make sure the car wins every show car competition it enters.

Part 9
See the story of this 1934 Graham - what makes this particular one valuable is that it has never been restored, painted, or had any significant work done to it, making it the only “surviver” of its kind in the world. The Porsche 356 had the most powerful engine Porsche produced in 1939. Designed by Ferry Porsche, son of Ferdinand, this is the revolutionary sports car that would define Porsche for the next 70 years.

Part 10
When French entrepreneur Emile Delahaye turned his attention from brick building to car building, the result was a collectible beauty that is currently worth over five million dollars: the 1948 Delahaye 135N. Oliver Collins has always been an ‘Alfa’ guy, so when his 1948 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 came along, he was willing to do whatever it took to make it his own.

During a military training mishap in 1958, a Mark 15, Mod Zero nuclear weapon was lost a few miles from the shores of Tybee Island, Georgia. The bomb was twelve feet long and weighing 7,600 pounds. It’s a big bomb, but it was never found. After studying the flight path of the plane that dropped the bomb, weather conditions of the night of the accident and tidal patterns of the last 50 years, a multi agency task force searched the shoals.

February 5, 1958 – the height of the Cold War. Air Force Col. Howard Richardson pilots his B-47 Stratojet bomber on a training mission in which Reston, Virginia doubles as Moscow – which Richardson is to level, in simulated fashion, with the bomb on board. F-86 Sabre jets scramble to intercept the B-47, but they’re too late and Richardson hits his virtual target. Next Richardson races toward the South Carolina border – friendly airspace in the exercise – still trying to elude the fighter jets on his tail. He pulls complex high-altitude maneuvers, and fires up his radar-scrambling device to cloak himself. It works. A little too well.

Over South Carolina, an F-86 suddenly emerges from cloud cover and slams into the B- 47. Fighter pilot Clarence Stewart ejects at 30,000 feet and watches his jet crash below him. Col. Richardson thinks he can save his plane and heads for the nearest military base. After three approaches at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia, Richardson decides the runway’s too short. If he slides off the end, the bomb he’s carrying will shoot through the plane like a bullet through a gun barrel – and he and his crew would be killed. The experienced pilot flies out over the ocean and radios for permission to jettison the bomb. Just before 3am, about 7,000 feet over the water near Tybee Island, Richardson orders the hatch opened – and thermonuclear bomb Number 47782 drops silently into the darkness. The crew reports seeing no explosion. Richardson lands safely – wondering if the bomb did the same.

And is the bomb fully armed? After the incident, the Pentagon sent a classified memo to the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, reporting that “a [REDACTED] nuclear weapon was jettisoned.” Was it “unarmed” or “complete”? Everyone agrees that Number 47782 contains more that 400 pounds of TNT explosives and weapons grade uranium. The US government and Col. Richardson insist the bomb is missing its plutonium capsule, the trigger needed for a nuclear explosion. But Congressional testimony in 1966 from Robert McNamara’s Assistant for Nuclear Defense, W. Jack Howard, called 47782 a “complete weapon” and distinguished it (and another lost on an A-4 in the Western Pacific off of the USS Ticonderoga) from other lost bombs that had no plutonium capsule. Furthermore, the chief of the crew responsible for loading nuclear bombs onto planes at the time claims he never loaded a weapon without its plutonium capsule.

The Mark 15, Mod Zero works like this: On impact, the TNT explodes, causing 175 detonators around the fist-sized plutonium capsule to blow simultaneously. The blasts implode the plutonium, and when it reaches critical mass, it begins a self-sustaining chain reaction of splitting atoms that produces enormous energy. At the same time, the uranium becomes unstable, adding heat and pressure to the expanding fireball. All this combines, within 1/600 billionth of a second, to create the most devastating explosion known to mankind.

The day after the accident, a massive search begins, led by Navy Lt. Cdr. Art Arseneault. Military personnel and civilian experts use hand-held sonar, magnetometers, sonar – even dragging nets and grappling hooks along the muddy shallows. Navy warships and Air Force jets provide security. For three months, they search for any sign of the bomb – yet find nothing. The Pentagon lists number 47782 as “irretrievably lost.” Amazingly, it’s only one of 11 nuclear bombs the US cannot find at the time. These missing weapons are labeled “Broken Arrows.”

A 2001 Air Force report estimates that, if the bomb were ever found, it would take five years and $11 million to recover it. In 2004, the government sent a 20-person team to collect water and sand samples, and countless instrument readings from the sound. The data were sent to federal laboratories for analysis, but the results were inconclusive. The bomb is still there, but no one is sure where, and in what state.

Set against a backdrop of team dynamics of a veteran racer, a rookie racer, and the pursuit of promise, dreams and a number 1 plate. Over the course of the series, the team will define a superbike, define a company, and define themselves. Or with all these unknowns… fail miserably.

Episode 1
The track for round one of the Canadian Superbike Championship is 2.8 km long, but the road to get there was a lot longer than that. Our story started months ago, at this race shop, in the eastern townships of Quebec where a new bike had been delivered from Germany. Chapter two is was in Jennings, Florida, where winter testing was supposed to shake out the bugs. And now? The first round often sets the tone for the rest of the season. The unknowns of a new team and a new bike would suggest that nothing will be predictable this year.

Episode 2
First - in superbike racing, it’s where you want to be. And the radX/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team is about to find out if it belongs here. This is the first time ever a BMW Factory Team will race this superbike on North American soil. Mirabel Quebec. Circuit Icar. The first round of the Canadian Superbike Championship.

Episode 3
Race City Calgary, a track made from an airport landing strip. The radX BMW team is 5th and 6th in the standings, a pretty discouraging place to be this early in the season. The racers aren’t showing despair… at least not outwardly. Both the veteran racer Martin and Ferreira, the rookie are in the position - they’ve got to prove the right guys got the best job in the racing.

Episode 4
Race 4 of 7 at Ontario’s European style Mosport track. These long flowing lines are well-suited to the BMW S1000RR superbike. Coming into the weekend, the team is poised to beat the undefeated front-runner… but everything changes in a heartbeat, and in the most unexpected way. And that’s called ‘racing’.

Episode 5
Round 5 at Mosport. This is the round that determines whether or not the Number 1 plate is within grasp. But frontrunner Jordan Szoke isn’t giving an inch. It’s a really bad time to learn what the penalty is for a jumped start – especially when you’re having the best race of your career.

Episode 6
The final race weekend of the National Canadian Superbike season at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. The radX/BMW Motorrad Canada superbike team questions whether it has the right stuff to race on this track at all. The veteran racer was air lifted out of here last year, and he’s already suffered one get-off during practice, probably due to nerves. The finishes have been wildly unpredictable all season and now it all comes down to results this weekend. For the racers, what happens this weekend determines whether they’ll compete at all next year.

VOLUME ONE - Atlantic Region - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador

Cape Breton Highlands National Park - Nova Scotia
This is the oldest National Park in the Canadian Maritimes. Winding through this prime whale watching territory is the Cabot Trail - showing off the park’s most striking assets. Home to some of the highest densities of moose ever recorded anywhere in the world; it’s virtually impossible to travel here without seeing some kind of wildlife. But, for Cape Breton it is the explosion of populations that remains a threat. Park ecologists scramble to deal with the aftermath of the budworm and moose infestations, while threats of multiplying populations loom underwater. Cape Breton Highlands is the oldest national park in the Maritimes, but in many ways it’s still evolving.

Torngat Mountains National Park - Newfoundland and Labrador
Folding treeless and rugged up the Labrador coast. Aboriginal people have lived, fished and hunted in this region for over 7000 years. But in the mid 20th century they were systematically moved off the land. This park was in part created to return the aboriginal people to their birthright. This park is also an ideal spot to get an advanced look at the effects of climate change on arctic regions.

Fundy National Park - New Brunswick
This small patch of rugged wilderness in southern New Brunswick - sitting on the Bay of Fundy coast, is heavily influenced by the bay’s tides - the highest tides in the world! But the fish in these waters are in serious trouble, especially the area’s unique salmon species. Logging took a heavy toll on the water system here. In only fifteen years, the number of returning adult salmon dropped from forty-five thousand to a mere two hundred. Now the park is teaming up with public and private industry and special interest groups to try to influence what goes on around it.

Terra Nova National Park - Newfoundland and Labrador
Tucked into the Newfoundland coast is a beautiful enigma, Terra Nova National Park. It’s a place where assumptions of the truth prove false. Its rugged boreal forest was protected from fire for decades, a decision that is in fact destroying many of the most prominent trees. The introduction of the moose seemed benign, but now the next generation of trees is being decimated. The otter was though to be a threat to the delicate cod nursery, but instead it is found to be a protector. Terra Nova National Park is a testament to reexamination and perseverance against everything you once thought right.

VOLUME TWO - Eastern Region - Ontario and Quebec

Point Pelee National Park - Ontario
This is the second smallest national park in Canada, but while Point Pelee may be small, its reputation among bird watchers is gigantic. This small patch of land in southwestern Ontario boasts one of the biggest concentrations of birds during spring and fall migration. But this birder’s paradise is also a theatre of life and death. There are more species at risk here than in any other park in Canada. In fact, the park itself is in danger from coastal erosion, and massive use of pesticides in the past. For the park and the animals that stop here, every day is a fight for survival.

Bruce Peninsula and Fathom Five National Marine Park - Ontario
Located in prime Great Lakes territory these two protected areas sit side by side, brimming with life, spectacular scenery, and cultural treasures. Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park are the last refuge in Southern Ontario for many rare species. Thousand-year-old cedars, rare orchids and the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake all live with and within the landscape’s rocky cracks and crevices. But, life underwater is out of control. Invasive species are taking over. And preserving diversity on this ancient geological backbone is a constant struggle that requires a delicate balance.

La Mauricie National Park - Quebec
Every fall this park in Quebec becomes vibrant and alive as the leaves of the Canadian Shield forest turn to red and gold. The trees lure visitors from around the world. But as much as those trees are a blessing, they have also been a curse. The 150 lakes are clogged with the effects of a hundred years of logging. The desire to preserve what hasn’t been cut has also damaged the forest. Now prescribed burns and lake cleanups are attempting to erase the sins of the past.

St. Lawrence Islands National Park - Ontario
The scattered terrain of St. Lawrence Islands is a significant migration corridor for many small mammals and rare wildlife. Sandwiched between some of Canada’s largest urban centers, this landscape is also host to many other travelers. Balance between maintaining natural areas and the encroaching human development is a delicate challenge facing this fragmented environment.

VOLUME THREE - Midwest Prairies & Arctic Region - Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut and Northwest Territories

Grasslands National Park - Saskatchewan
This park sits on Canada’s border between Saskatchewan and Montana. Two separate blocks, one east and one west, protect the North American mixed grass prairie - one of the most threatened ecosystems in North America. In an attempt to protect the land, and the endangered species that live here, Parks Canada is trying to stitch the landscape together by buying chunks of real estate from willing sellers. They are also using the ranchers that sold their estates back to the Park as rangers. It’s a unique treatment but it needs to work. The future of the park hinges on it.

Riding Mountain National Park - Manitoba
A constant friend to many Manitobans - more than 250,000 people visit the park every year. But the popularity poses a problem. How do you protect the landscape from the people and for the people at the same time? You can see this battle in the ecological balancing act that is Clear Lake, a crystalline pool that cannot be left to its own will. The battle is also felt in the debate over bovine tuberculosis in the deer and elk in the park. The disease is sometimes transferred to neighboring cattle herds. There are no easy answers when you have to protect nature and people at the same time.

Wapusk National Park - Manitoba
One of the world’s largest polar bear denning sites, Wapusk means “white bear” in the native Cree language. The park is a unique ecological zone bordering the arctic, hosting both tundra and coastal marine environments. This landscape provides habitat for over 250 species of birds as well as hyper-abundant snow geese colonies. Though wildlife seems to be growing, this evolution must be monitored. Parks Canada continues to watch over this landscape as it sits on the precarious border to the ever-changing Canadian north.

Quttinirpaaq National Park - Nunavut
This Park is quite literally on top of the world. Visitors here number in dozens annually, and some years not even that many make the trip. It is remote and beautiful. However, even in this pristine surrounding you can find the ugly footprint of humans. Bases for arctic exploration are littered with garbage, some of it toxic. The effects of climate change are felt in the melting polar cap and the 20 degree heat. To visit Quttinirpaaq National Park is to see the best and the worst this world has to offer.

Auyuittuq National Park - Nunavut
Above the Arctic Circle, in Canada’s far north sits Auyuittuq National Park. This remote wilderness is home to polar bears, massive glaciers and Mount Thor - one of the sharpest sheer drops to be found on the planet. ‘Auyuittuq’ means ‘The Land That Never Melts’ in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit. However, research reports rising temperatures and this once frozen landscape is changing.

Nahanni National Park Reserve - Northwest Territories
Recently expanded to nearly six times its original size, Nahanni National Park now envelops the entire Nahanni River Watershed. The South Nahanni River rushes through the park providing scenic routes for visitors to immerse in this wilderness. Traveling down the river one comes across striking waterfalls, vast mountain peaks and canyons as well as natural hot springs. In the past there have been challenges with pollutants flowing from outside the park down the river. But, as the park area is now the third largest in Canada, the management of this immense and wild environment faces a whole new set of challenges.

VOLUME FOUR - Western Region and the Rockies - Alberta, British Columbia

Banff National Park - Alberta
This park is the first and perhaps still the finest of all Canada’s National Parks. Banff’s bustling town site is an oasis of civilization surrounded by untamed wildlife. Within its boundaries, Banff National Park contains a sampling of Canada’s greatest natural assets - from tiny snails, to grizzly bear tracks; from back country skiing to ice climbing. But hosting almost 4 million visitors a year means Banff must balance the infinite complexities of a vast ecosystem with the heavy footprint of the modern world.

Waterton Lakes National Park - Alberta
This park lies on the border of two of Canada’s most striking landscapes - the Rocky Mountains and the vast prairie grasslands. The contrast of these two biologically diverse ecosystems makes this one of the best places in the country to spot wildlife. However, the untamed nature of the park’s predators has caused deadly confrontations on cattle ranches neighboring Waterton’s borders. Now the park must work with its neighbors to ensure protection on both sides of the fence.

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve - British Columbia
On the west side of Vancouver Island, stands the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve - one of Canada’s most beautiful and powerful parks. Raging pacific storms pound 125 kilometers of rugged western shore into one of the world’s premier coastal temperate rainforests - dumping an average annual rainfall of nearly 3 and a half meters. With all that rainfall comes unique vegetation. The park’s formidable Sitka spruce can grow to 100 meters tall and boasts a trunk you could drive a small car thru. Despite the richness of the environment, it is also home to 42 species-at-risk. From tiny flowers, to giant marine mammals, to the most fragile rainforest ecology, Pac Rim in spring showcases the struggle for survival on a rugged windswept coast.

Gulf Island National Park Reserve - British Columbia
Its fragmented structure, stitched together from a series of islands sandwiched between the urban development of Vancouver Island and mainland British Colombia, Gulf Island National Park was established in 2003 in order to protect a diverse landscape from recreational development that threatened to overrun this natural wonder. The latest high tech equipment is being used to help rare ecosystems fight back against years of misuse.

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve - British Columbia
Known as the ‘Canadian Galapagos, Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve shelters some of the most lush and remote landscapes in the continent. Home to the Haida Nation for over 10,000 years, the area’s coasts and ancient spruce forests are rich in cultural treasure as well as natural life. The southern tip of the park reserve is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, where one can find century old totem poles and longhouses eaten away by thriving lichen. Distinct species have flourished here and a sense of primeval life has been retained on these isolated islands.

Kejimkujik National Park – Nova Scotia
The only inland park in the Canadian Maritimes, Kejimikujik history is visible. Petroglyphs carved into the landscape represent a time when the park’s lakes and rivers were prime canoe routes for tribal communities of Mi'kmaq. Yet, with a 200-day growing season the park is a lush green paradise on Canada’s east coast.

Pukaskwa National Park – Ontario
Pukaskwa’s unpredictable landscape features boreal forests and iron rich plutonic rocks, which scientist have compared to the geology of Mars. On cobbled beaches overlooking Lake Superior, one can spot rare arctic plants due to the cooling effect of the lake. This diverse, rugged wilderness is the only one of its kind in the province.

Tuktut Nogait National Park – North West Territories
This hidden wonder of the arctic is one of the great secrets of the Parks system. Tuktut Nogait (“young caribou”) offers a traditional land where caribou, bears and wolves roam among spectacular canyon vistas. More than 500 archaeological sites are co-operatively managed with the Inuvialuit, who still use the park for subsistence hunting, fishing and trapping.

Yoho National Park – British Columbia
On the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains is Yoho National Park. The park’s 28 mountain peaks are carved by picturesque waterfalls and more than 250 miles of hiking trails. Some of the world’s most significant fossils rest in Yoho’s steep rocks. The Burgess Shale World Heritage Site holds the fossilized remains of more than 120 mammal species dating back more than 515 million years.

Wood Buffalo National Park – Alberta
At almost 28, 000 square miles – the size of Sweden - Wood Buffalo is Canada’s largest National Park. Populated by one of the biggest free-roaming bison herds on the planet, this vast boreal wilderness expands over unique salt plains. The park is also home to the last remaining natural nesting area in the world for endangered whooping cranes.

Mingan Archipelago National Park – Québec
A scattering of thirty limestone islands and over 1000 islets, Mingan Archipelago is a sacred gem along the Gulf of the St. Lawrence. This park’s ecosystem protects a world of diversity from huge monoliths created during the last Ice Age, to Minke whales and the rare Mingan thistle.
