Mauritania lies between Senegal and the West Sahara and is the country of the Moors. Through drought and political upheaval, the traditionally nomadic population has progressively settled. On the border between the desert and the Sahel, in Layoun Province, this documentary explores and brings to life a rising star - Ooleya Mint Amartichitt.

This program includes rare interview footage with Ooleya Mint Amartichitt, her family and other musicians of the region, as they travel and sing their way through the extraordinary harsh desert landscape of Mauritania.

As Ooleya Mint Amartichitt sings, howls and whispers poetry in praise of the Prophet or dignitaries of her tribe, the Ulaad Mubaraks, we are gently rocked by the haunting voice of this diva. Ooleya Mint Amartichitt sings and plays the ardin (a type of calabash harp) and is accompanied by her sisters' voices and her brother playing the ancient tidinit - a five string lute.

Listen and watch this full length concert performed by Ooleya Mint Amartichitt and her family. Beautiful, intelligent and radiant, her poetry praises the Prophet. She evokes the main figures of her tribe, the Ulâad Mubârak with unforgettable passion.

Voices and chants of the ancient Manganiar poets of Rajasthan

This DVD contains a one-hour concert and the documentary “Of Sand and Stars”

This program presents the Manganiar, who are among the most sophisticated musicians of Western Rajasthan. While listening to their extraordinary voices, music and the poetry of the region this documentary travels the scattered villages of the Thar desert around the town of Jaisalmer.

The Manganiyars are a caste of musicians. For centuries their clans have recited poems to the stars and to their Rajastan princes. Their melodious chants are accompanied by the "kamanchiya" violin - invoking nature, the deities and love. The program presents historical information about each of the instruments used to accompany the traditional Manganiyar songs.

At the end of this documentary journey a festival gathers with hundreds of Manghaniyars and their families. An event rarely recorded on film before.

Also included on this disc is a Concert from Theatre de la Ville, Paris

This concert presents six members of the Manganiyar clan singing and performing ballads about the kings as well as Sufi poems written by the mystics. Even though they are classified as folk musicians, their traditional music is classical and is clearly part of the roots of Indian classical music. The combination of folk music and complex classical music makes their performance special.

Two of the performers - Sakar Khan Manganiar and Shri Lakha Khan Manganiar have received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award from India's National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama. It is the highest Indian recognition given to practicing artists.

In the 14th century this opulent capital of Tamerlane (Timur) was an all important station along the Silk Road. You will see the turquoise domes of Samarkand’s mosques and the sparkling mosaics of its mausoleums accompanied by the music of the region.

In Tashkent, the “Stone City” and the modern-day capital of Uzbekistan, we meet and interview Monâjât Yultshieva. Her warm and solemn voice, reflection of her inner, sincere and emotional personality, sings the Maqqom in a haunting prayer. Monâjât takes us to to her native village, in the Fergana valley, on the border with Tajikistan.

As we discover places of worship and shrines where one can still see the mark of the prime post-hegira mystics, we search for Sorab Fakir, the red bearded cantor. This region is where the people still worship the great Sufi poet Shah Abdul Lateef, who expressed so well the spirit of the human soul. Here, a loving woman is a symbol of the soul, restlessly searching for the eternal beloved. The musicians are virtuoso, their instruments fabulous and their music energetic and haunting.

The human voice is a mirror for the soul of the Sindhi people living in the Indus Valley of Pakistan. In this concert one can see and feel the colors, perfumes, joys, sadness and deep emotions of the Soufis from Sind. The message of the ancient mystic monks from the first centuries of Hegira lives on in this soulful and rich presentation.

This concert features Sohrab Fakir who was widely recognized as the greatest living Sindhi folk singer, until his death in October 2009. Noted Sufi vocalists and musicians Mirasi Ghulam Abbas, Mohammad Mirbahar and Mohammad Urs Batti perform brilliantly.

Located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, Armenia has maintained a Christian tradition since the 4th century. During this long history, Armenia has been subjected to invasions, persecutions, deportations and the first genocide of the 20th century. It suffered through 70-years of Soviet dictatorship and declared its independence in 1991. Today, nearly half of Armenian’s population live outside its borders.

Like the Achugh - the traveling Armenian Troubadours - this documentary follows the winding roads of Armenia to discover its landscape, its people and its music. The documentary features Yeghish Manoukian a brilliant and accomplished player of the doudouk, a double reed instrument popular with the people of Eastern Europe. Yeghish is accompanied by Agop Boyadjian, Mais Avoyan and Stepani Adgozian, creating a brilliant ensemble seeking the soul of Armenia through its still popular traditional music.

Join the crew of the US Air force’s ‘ski birds’ as they fly missions into the world’s most unforgiving terrain.
