What is it like to be the best? What does it take to get to the top? It is always a compelling subject. Now you can witness the process as it takes place. This documentary film offers the first in-depth look at the college recruiting process of the nation’s best point guard in women’s basketball.
But this is much more than a “dedicated athlete’s story.” Nicole Kaczmarski is a beautiful and fun-loving teenager with a dedicated father and a passion for the game. Her talent on the court was apparent at an early age and when she was invited to play on the high school varsity team as a twelve year old! This created a biter division between her divorced parents as her mother did not want her to play. Kaz moved out of her mother’s house and her dad, Peter was given custody. The adventures that follow are enlightening to any family involved with a talented youngster.
After moving in with her father, Kaz (over a 2-year span) enrolled in three different high schools to pursue the best program for her game. Basketball was her passion and he nurtured it. They searched all over New York for a club team, outside of the high school program, to further develop her game. They wound up commuting to Philadelphia, from Eastern Long Island, several times a week, to get the best coaching in the country. When summer rolled around, she and her father crisscrossed the country as Pete chauffeured her from tournament to tournament and camp to camp.
Her skills would land her on an international all-star team that played in Paris. She was named to every All-American team in the country. The bond between father and daughter grew stronger. But Kaz missed her mom and the two made amends and she moved back into her mother’s house at age 16. Dad was to take care of basketball matters, mom would do the other things.
Finally, Kaz’s senior year of high school arrives. It is time to choose a college. The best universities in the country want her. Kaz and her father are divided on the criteria of how to select a college and a widening rift develops in their relationship. How will this conflict be resolved?
This documentary film records what happens. The tension and pressure of having Olympic coaches knocking at your door and calling you on the phone. The demands of performing on the court, while keeping up with class work and trying to make a decision, all take a toll on Kaz. This high pressure odyssey has a bittersweet ending as Kaz decides to follow her own dreams.
